Saturday Snapshots (yeah, it's Sunday)

Well, well, well... it is the last morning of 2017, and I am finally getting around to my first post since October - it's been a while! (snapshots from yesterday will follow this little recap of what has been happening the last two months)

The farm has been busy, the potion making has kept me even busier, and then Christmas is my favorite time of year, so I pushed the blog to the wayside for a bit.....

Anyhow, here it is, early-morning on December 31, 2017. A little recap of happenings on the farm since I was here last....

We have a new project and a new plan for one acre of the property..... I have partnered with an amazing woman with an experienced green thumb, and I will share those plans in time!

I have continued my project of clearing all the overgrowth, brambles, and weeds to uncover the most beautiful land to share for camping, relaxing, hosting, and enjoying..... We also have a few more hammocks hanging about on the property... We have started a little irrigation project that involves catching rainwater off the huge colorful 1300 sq ft outbuilding and into two huge tanks for storage for watering the gardens.... slowly but surely things are coming to fruition of my original vision of this place when I bought it back in 2014!!

We drained our sweet little salt-water pool, and before we could actually put it away, Rose saw her way into the backyard and completely shredded it to pieces. I like to imagine she was casually just trotting along being nosey and then stepped on it and then all hell broke loose. I mean it was literally shredded - like she totally spooked herself while standing right smack in the middle of it..... Anyway, it was funny, and we have a brand new one bought at the end of season on clearance to get up and filled for next summer....

The ol' Ford F100 decided to give me some fits this month and left me stranded a few times, but a new starter, solenoid switch, and battery, and I think she is good to go for a bit!

We still have our tree up, and will most likely have it up until it is a fire hazard ;) .... I will post a few pics soon of how beautiful it is. We got the fattest tree on the lot, and the fattest tree we have ever had, and I am loving the ginormous chubby tree taking up so much floor space in our little 900 sq ft farmhouse!

So.... now here it is, New Years Eve... y'all got plans? I think I am gonna hold off on the "Sweet Stuff Sunday' post until the first Sunday of 2018, and watch The Hateful Eight instead, have a little cider, a little wine, and watch the free fireworks show that the neighbors put on every year.

Tomorrow we are doing the usual - cabbage, blackeyed peas, cornbread, and throwing a little golden tofu in the mix to start out the year on a meatless Monday. Then , it is back to the normal grind of the workweek and farmlife.

....and now.... the snapshots from yesterday!

Eli had to be a little badass and actually rammed the lawntractor while I was mowing his field!!! YES!!! He rammed it while I was on it - head on! So, he got to free-range until I was through...

I will be back tomorrow with my New Year's goals and dreams, so...... SEE YA NEXT YEAR! <3

saturday snapshots...

 morning walk with eddie..
 1000 faces...

I hadn't planned on burning today, but decided with the cool morning, and the threat of rain later, I could burn while cutting, so that I could keep an eye on the fires annnnnd give the land one last cutting for a while since everything is going dormant.

found these black widows on a piece of wood that I threw in the fire...

in all, I had four different fires around the property....
I cleaned up the fencelines.... yeah, buddy! Check out how clean they are!

As you can tell, it warmed up a bit throughout the day..... One of my favorite things is moving the embers back to expand the burn area while controlling the burn. This way the fire stays small, but the maximum amount if brush is burned.
it was cool and the grey clouds made for a very picturesque day!
with the cold snap a few weeks ago, and the heat wave after, the poor apple trees are a bit confused....
Christian and I picked up all the pecans we could before the rain rolls in....
I wanted to go over all 9 acres before the rain hit also, so IF any grass decides to come up, it will have a fresh cut to start..
spent some time in the field with this sweet baby girl while the fires burned...

cleared the leaves from the paths and added them to the burn piles.... keeps the snakes away from where we walk the Eddie bear!
 Nom nom nomnommm

...the fires are all out, and the rain has started....
and all these steps were why my poor feet needed an epsom bath!!! Ha!

Monday, Monday....

Monday morning.... Rainy, messy, and wet, Monday morning. It is totally a galoshes kind of day. Eddie and I just came in from a nice long, wet walk, and now I am off to get ready for the work day...

The weekend was really good. I got to spend some time with a friend's kiddos making art (they were making secret Christmas presents for their mama) - this could be one of the biggest reasons I am craving and posting about beer ;) , I went for a long Sunday dirt road walk with the neighbor, visited my awesome mama, got my calender for holiday markets alllllll organized, repaired a faulty part of the electric horse fence, cleaned off back porch and put up Christmas lights, and made a biscuit-like blueberry and cinnamon cobbler.

Our winters down here in Georgia are notorious for being wet, and this morning I am already making plans to clean off our front porch - it is a complete catch-all every time I need to make room in my car for something... I believe this evening, since it will most likely be still raining, I will clean off the front porch and PUT UP CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. Yes!!! I have the fever. It has been a weird year, filled with lady part problems, a bad dog bite, doctors visits, anemia, and broken things at the farm. I am soooooo ready for year end celebrations and the magic of Christmas.

yeah, yeah, these are all holiday beer ads. That is because I have not had the chance to enjoy a beer in over 6 months due to the anemia and health problems, antibiotics for dog bite, etc....so yes, come November, I am totally gonna be enjoying myself a beer when we get our tree after Thanksgiving!!!! I am just fantasizing til then, ok?!

Happy wet, rainy, messy Monday, y'all.

sunday sweet stuff

Today's treat: blueberry & cinnamon biscuit bake!

A most perrrrrrfect breakfast-y dish for cool autumn mornings!

I found a big bag of frozen blueberries that one of my neighbors had given me a while back, and decided to use them for today's sweet treat, so that is why it is a treat that may be a little out of season. The cinnamon makes it perfect for fall....

Ingredients:

2/3 C sugar
2 Tbs cornstarch
3/4 C water

3 C fresh or frozen blueberries
1 tsp cinnamon

1 C Cup 4 Cup GF flour
2 Tbs sugar
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/3 C milk
3 Tbs melted butter

butter a 9 x 9 glass baking dish, preheat oven to 425

in a med pot, add sugar, cornstarch, and water... bring to a boil while whisking. Let boil until slightly thickened, then add blueberries and mix well before adding to your buttered dish...

top with cinnamon..

in a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder.....
add melted butter and milk, stir until combined...

roll out to fit over blueberries.

bake for 25 min.
viola!
